The Blessed, The Judged, and The Approved: Lessons from Psalm 1

Psalm 1 serves as a gateway to the entire Book of psalms, presenting a thoughtful contrast between two ways of life—one that leads to divine blessing and another that ends in judgment.

This psalm divides humanity into three categories:
  • The Blessed (Righteous)
  • The Judged (Wicked)
  • The Approved (Those known by God)

1. The Blessed (Psalm 1:1-3)
The psalm opens with a declaration of blessing ("Blessed is the man...")
further explaining blessed life is not accidental but the result of deliberate choices.

                A. Whom will God Bless?
    • Walks not in the counsel of the wicked – God will bless those who do not take advice or walk in the path directed by those who reject God’s wisdom.
    • Nor stands in the path of sinners – God will bless those who refuse to adopt the lifestyle of those who live in rebellion against God.
    • Nor sits in the seat of scoffers – Will be blessed, when they do not join those who mock God’s truth, as mocking is the final stage of hardening one’s heart.
             B. What the Blessed Follow:
    • Delights in the law of the Lord – True happiness comes from loving God’s Word. When we make the practice — to meditate the word of the God on a regular basis, Happiness will be our lifestyle — As David (Psalm 1:2, 119:15), Isaac (Genesis 24:63), Joshua (Joshua 1:8) did rigorously & succeeded.
    • Meditates on it day and night – As God said to Joshua in Joshua 1:8 — "Keep this Book of the Law always on your lips; meditate on it day and night, so that you may be careful to do everything written in it. Then you will be prosperous and successful,". The lifestyle of meditating God’s word Day & Night is a vital thing in our daily lives to be blessed.
            C. How does the Blessed Prosper?
    • Like a tree planted by streams of water – When we meditate, we are deeply rooted in Christ, nourished, fruitful and we stay unaffected by life’s droughts (Whatever it may be).
    • Whatever he does prospers – This verse signifies mainly — life aligned with God’s purposes, yielding eternal fruit and can be applied in our daily lives too — as in studies, work life etc., As Brian Houston Said, "YOU’LL NEVER COME SECOND BY PUTTING GOD FIRST."

2. The Person God Judges (Psalm 1:4-5)
  • People like chaff driven by the wind – Without roots, they are weightless, directionless, and ultimately worthless. Such people will be judged — not blessed.
  • Those who do not stand in judgment – Unlike the righteous, who will be justified, the wicked will be condemned when God evaluates all deeds.
  • Nor sinners in the congregation of the righteous – Eternal separation awaits those who reject God’s ways.

3. The Person God Approves (Psalm 1:6)
The psalm concludes with a sobering truth:
  • "The Lord knows the way of the righteous" – This speaks of God’s intimate care, guidance, and understanding the people he loves.
  • "The way of the wicked will perish" – Such wicked people path leads to destruction, not because God is cruel, but because they chose a road that ends in ruin.

Conclusion: Choosing the Right Path

The key lessons are:

  • Avoid evil influences – Who we listen to shapes who we become.
  • Delight in God’s Word – True wisdom and joy come from Scripture.
  • Live rooted in Christ – Only those connected to Him bear lasting fruit.
  • Remember eternity – Our choices today determine our destiny tomorrow.
As Jesus later taught, there are only two roads (Matthew 7:13-14). Psalm 1 urges us to choose wisely—not just for now, but also for eternity.
